The suprising tuber
The sweet potato, despite what the name suggests, is not actually a potato at all. It is a tuberous crop which means it falls under vegetables. The first sweet potato was grown by the Incas 800 years after Christ. It wasn’t until 500 years later that the sweet potato was introduced to Europe, after Columbus brought the product along after his voyage of discovery. Now we have even set up our own Dutch Sweet Potato cultivation!
Colorful sweet potato
You probably know the orange sweet potato. In addition to this most famous variety, the exotic yam also comes in purple, yellow and white. Each sweet potato varies in shape from round to oblong.
Carbon footprint
The sweet potato comes in different colors, each of which has its own flavor and texture. Combined with the growing popularity of the different varieties, we at Jansen-Dongen also saw an enormous growth in the amount of CO² emitted to get the sweet potato to the Netherlands. During the journey the sweet potato travels over 7000 km and emits more than 2.5 tons of CO². We thought that this had to change!
Together we work on a better environment.
Dutch sweet potato cultivation
To reduce these shocking figures of CO² emissions so much, we at Jansen-Dongen started looking for a solution. We found it in the cooperation with the Van Geel brothers of ‘De Zoete Pieper’. After years of testing and research, we succeeded in being the first to grow fresh sweet potatoes in the Netherlands. In the first year we already supplied 80 tons of sweet potatoes from Dutch soil with 0.5 hectare. And we are now at 10 hectares for the cultivation of the Dutch Sweet Potato. An achievement of which we are enormously proud.
